Council looks to fill 2 empty seats

McKees Rocks council is looking to fill two vacancies following the death of Chas Maritz and the resignation of Leslie Walker.

Maritz, also a life member in the volunteer fire department and commander of the local VFW post, died April 11 after a long struggle with health problems. He was elected to represent the borough’s third ward for a four-year term in November 2019. His unfilled term expires December 2023.

Walker submitted her resignation the following day, after serving the first ward since 2018. She secured reelection in 2021 and her term expires at the end of 2025.

In her resignation statement, Walker said she wished her former colleagues well, but also encouraged them to “focus on the equality provided to each and every citizen of McKees Rocks.”

“The past four years of serving on the council has been an eye-opening experience,” her statement read. “This experience has led me in the direction of serving my community in other capacities.”

Council is accepting letters of interest from first and third ward candidates through May 9, and plans to approve successors to each vacancy during the regular business meeting the following evening.
