Do you think it's time to retire your Old Glory?

-ROBINSON TOWNSHIP HISTORICAL SOCIETY-

By Janet Gonter

Is your flag faded, worn, or tattered? If it’s time to replace it, we can help you dispose of it.

Since 2014, the Robinson Township Historical Society has been a participant in the Retire Your Old Glory Program. The organization was established in 2011 by Denise Etter, who had a passion for restoring respect for the American flag. Its 15 chapters throughout the Western Pennsylvania area have retired more than 35,000 flags to date.

So far, the historical society has collected 1,332 flags. These are delivered to Robinson Boy Scout Troop 301, who then dispose of them with respect and dignity by burning them in a solemn ceremony. According to the U.S. Flag Code, “If your flag is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be retired in a dignified and respectful manner and replaced with a new flag.” Americans are urged to “Renew the American spirit, fly a new flag.”

The red, white, and blue receptacle is located in the lobby of the Robinson Township Municipal Building at 1000 Church Hill Road, where everyone is encouraged to drop off unserviceable flags of any size.

Thanks to all who continue to make this worthwhile project a big success.
