Email scam in McKees Rocks

Residents be warned – on Nov. 22. McKees Rocks Borough posted about a con perpetrated by someone pretending to be Mayor David Flick.

This sham artist has been requesting gift cards via email whilst masquerading as the mayor in a phishing scam.

“If you receive such email, please report it to your email provider and/or delete,” the posting cautioned.

Residents are advised not to click on links or reply.

The Federal Trade Commission warns specifically of gift card scams.

If you are asked to pay for something by putting money on a gift card and then the requestor asks for the numbers on the back of the card, “they’re trying to scam you.”

According to the FTC, “No real business or government agency will ever insist you pay them with a gift card. Anyone who demands to be paid with a gift card is a scammer.”
