Federal funds may spell Hays Manor rebrand

-McKEES ROCKS-

Efforts to rehabilitate the aging Hays Manor housing facility in McKees Rocks may be sped along by a $450,000 planning grant from the federal government awarded to the Allegheny County Housing Authority.

Built in the 1950s, Hays Manor is one of eight nationwide recipients of the funds, awarded to help reconceptualize the project around contemporary public housing needs. Additional funds would need to be raised at a later point to execute the project.

A project description released by the HUD states the current facility “fails to meet the needs of the residents and the community.”

“The Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant will position the community to create an ambitious plan that will revitalize Hays Manor, catalyze community improvements, and expand opportunities for residents,” the description continues.

The federal agency will partner with a range of local stakeholders to ensure the plan reflects the community’s needs, according to a press release.
