Input needed for monument to honor borough's 130 years

-McKEES ROCKS-

The McKees Rocks Historical Society is seeking input to create a monument celebrating the 130th anniversary of McKees Rocks’ Incorporation.

People who want to join the 130th anniversary committee are encouraged to attend meetings at the Heritage Valley Senior Independent Living Community, 30 Heckel Road, Kennedy (previously the Willows Independent Living Community.) Meetings are scheduled to take place the first Wednesday of each month, starting Sept. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Vicki Batcha, treasurer of the historical society, said the monument will take the form of informational pedestals mounted in a green space on lower Chartiers Avenue displaying a timeline of prominent events in the history of the borough. She is hoping residents will suggest the prominent people and events in McKees Rocks which deserve to be included. Batcha plans to ask for five suggestions from each person who attends.

“We’re going to see what people can find,” Batcha said.

A Valentine’s Day dance hosted at the McKees Rocks VFW Post 418 had about 200 guests and raised more than $5,000 for the project.
