LaRoi Johnson has announced plans to step down as Sto-Rox athletic director and head football coach after four seasons with the district.

Johnson, who has led the Vikings to the WPIAL playoffs three times since his head coach appointment in 2018, issued a short statement on social media announcing his departure. He did not respond to requests for further comment.

“I want to first say thank you to everyone who has been a part of the last four years,” his statement said. “It was an honor to be your Head Coach the last 4 seasons. To every student athlete I coached I thank you for all of your efforts. I will love you always and will be in your corner forever.”

After finishing WPIAL runners-up in consecutive seasons, Johnson was promoted to athletic director in June 2020. Once hired, Johnson replaced several longtime coaches with external recruits and articulated plans to build a new athletic culture from the ground up.

Cameron Culliver, school board president, said he wants Johnson’s successor to continue the momentum.

“As we move forward in looking for new personnel, I do hope some of the things Coach Johnson has started will continue and the next person continues to make things better,” Culliver said.

“I would like to wish Coach Johnson luck in his future endeavors and I hope he realizes the impacts he has made to this community.”
