After the McKees Rock council approved a demolition contract back in April for the former Maennerchor Hall at the intersections of Frank and Bruce streets, crews finally got to work tearing it down early last week.

The large, crumbling dance hall originally took its name from the German “male choir” that was incorporated there in 1892 as a music-themed social club.

The club eventually disbanded and the building fell into disrepair.

Work undertaken by Minniefield Demolition Services of West Mifflin to tear down the building was held up by county regulations on asbestos removal, according to Doug Evans, engineer for the borough.
