Shutout: Vikings trample McGuffey

The Sto-Rox Vikings rolled over McGuffey 36-0 in front of a packed house Sept. 10.

After a slow start, the big play offense got going with 3:30 left in the first quarter, with senior Austin Jones connecting to junior Zay Davis for a 55-yard touchdown pass. McGuffey marched 77 yards down to the Sto-Rox 2-yard line, where they were stopped short by Amir Short’s tackle.


On the first play from scrimmage, senior Jaymar Pearson set a school record with a 98-yard run resulting in a Viking touchdown. The Vikings led 14-0 at the end of the intermission.


McGuffey took a second-half kickoff but was forced to punt. The effort was blocked by Amare Hibbler, recovering possession to the Vikings in McGuffey’s half. Pearson took another one-play touchdown run, this time for 41 yards.


McGuffey lost possession through a fumble, recovered for the Vikings by Matthew Johnson. On the following play, Austin Jones hit Jaymont Green-Miller for a 59-yard touchdown pass. McGuffey lost possession again through a fumble recovered by Kquartazz Kirksey. On the third play of the Viking possession, Jaymar Pearson scores his third touchdown of the night, this time a 75-yard run.


Highlights:

• Jaymar Pearson rushed for 264 yards on just eight carries.


• Austin Jones completed 12 of 19 passes for 184 yards, including the play on Pearson’s record-setting 98-yard touchdown.


• Tre’Shaun Barron led the team with 13 tackles.


The Vikings will host Avonworth on Sept. 17 and travel to Shadyside Academy on Sept. 24.
