Weekend closures coming up for the Thornburg Bridge

The Thornburg Bridge is scheduled to be closed for weekends throughout May and June. At this time, the closures are set for May 5-8, May 19-22, and June 2- 5. Closures begin at 9 p.m. on Friday and run until 6 a.m. the following Monday.

On March 10, PennDOT announced that a portion of Cornell Avenue at the bridge would close to traffic beginning continuously through mid-June to allow staging and access to the Thornburg Bridge. Motorists will be detoured.

Bridge preservation work including concrete parapet and sidewalk repairs, concrete deck overlay and fencing installation will occur on the Route 60 Thornburg Bridge over Chartiers Creek. To allow the work to occur, motorists will see a long-term lane restriction on the bridge with a single-lane of traffic being maintained in each direction, the long-term closure of turning lanes on the bridge and the closure and detour of Cornell Avenue to through traffic.

Overall work is expected to conclude in the summer of 2023.

The bridge preservation project is budgeted at $3.15 million and extends Route 60 between Woodmere Drive and Cornell Avenue. Additional work will include traffic signal replacements and curb ramp upgrades. Swank Construction Company, LLC is the prime contractor.
